Our Top 10 Wedding Planning Tips for Newly Engaged Couples

Our top Wedding Planning Tips...
Getting engaged is one of those moments that stays with you. There’s the excitement, the happy blur of telling people, the clinking of glasses… and then suddenly, the realisation that there’s quite a lot to think about! Eek! There's venues to explore, guest lists to sort, choosing food, what music will get people om the dancefloor, and of course.. theres the timings, how the day will actually feel when it’s happening. It can all feel brilliant and overwhelming in equal measure.
Here at The Barns at Redcoats, we’ve been lucky enough to be part of hundreds of wedding days, and honestly, that feeling never gets old. No two days are ever the same, and that’s exactly why we love what we do.
Being part of so many weddings means you start to notice the things that really matter. Not just how a day looks, but how it feels. The calm before a ceremony. The way people relax once food and drinks start flowing (baby Guinness' anyone?!) Those little in-between moments that couples don’t always plan for, but remember forever.
We’re not here to tell you what your wedding should be. As far as we are concerned, there’s no checklist, no right way, and definitely no rules... it shouldn't be about trends or ticking boxes. Heres a collection of honest thoughts from our wedding team (Charli, Brim, Megan - thank you!), shaped by years of being right there in the middle of it all, helping couples bring their days to life. If anyone know - these ladies do!
If you’re just starting out, or somewhere in the middle of planning, we hope these tips feel reassuring. Like a quiet chat with someone who’s been there before, rooting for you, and reminding you that the best weddings are always the ones that feel most like the people getting married.
Barn weddings are at their best when they reflect you.
Your Wedding, Your Way.
One of the things we love most about what we do is that no two weddings here ever look the same. Over the years, we’ve hosted incredible one-day celebrations, intimate weddings with just closest family, full weekend takeovers, and church ceremonies followed by a big party in the Barns. Some couples want everything in one place, others love mixing tradition with something more informal later on. All of it works here.
That’s because flexibility sits at the heart of The Barns at Redcoats. We genuinely enjoy new ideas, creative flair and personal touches, and if something feels important to you, we’ll always explore how to make it happen. There’s no fixed template, no “this is how it’s done here”. Instead, there’s space to shape a day (or weekend) that feels like yours, supported by a team who know how to make those ideas run smoothly.
If you’re at the start of planning, our advice is simple: choose a venue that gives you options, not restrictions. The freedom to adapt your day is what makes it memorable.

If you feel comfortable on your first visit, trust that feeling.
Choose a Venue That Feels Like Home.
One thing we always notice when couples visit for the first time is how quickly they relax. You can usually tell within minutes if a space feels right. We see the shoulders literally drop, questions start flowing, and suddenly they’re chatting about where everyone might gather, where Nan would sit, what fav cocktail they would like as their wedding drink, or where they’d sneak off for five minutes together!
Weddings run best when couples feel at home, both in the space and with the people supporting them. It’s not just about how a venue looks, it’s about knowing you’re being looked after. Whether that’s leaving welcome drinks or thoughtful gifts for guests, or making sure you have a quiet moment together while everything else ticks along, those small details make a big difference.
We also know weddings can feel full on. There’s a lot happening and a lot of emotion in the room. Sometimes couples want to be right in the middle of it all, other times they need a few minutes to reset. Both are completely normal. Our job is to read the room, support what you need in that moment, and quietly keep everything running smoothly in the background.
Some of our favourite feedback is when couples tell us they didn’t have to think about anything on the day. They knew someone had their back, and that allowed them to fully enjoy it.
So our top tip here would be to trust your gut. If it feels right when you walk in, it probably is.

Experience Counts More Than You Think.
Choose a venue team you can trust to handle the unexpected.
Weddings bring together a lot of moving parts, and this is where experience really comes into its own. When you’re in it every weekend, you start to spot things early. The moment a room needs opening up, when guests are ready for the next part of the day, or when a tiny tweak will make everything feel smoother.
Our team has supported hundreds of weddings, which means we’ve seen a lot. Timings shift, weather changes, speeches run long, plans evolve. None of that is unusual, and it’s rarely a problem when you’ve got people around you who know how to adapt quietly and calmly.
That experience isn’t about control or sticking rigidly to a plan. It’s about reassurance. Knowing there’s a steady, capable team behind the scenes means you don’t need to worry if things run a little late, guests drift between spaces, or the day takes on a life of its own. We’re already thinking a few steps ahead, so you don’t have to.
One of the things couples tell us most often afterwards is that they felt able to properly enjoy their day. They weren’t clock-watching or second-guessing what was coming next. They knew where to be, what was happening, and that someone had their back.
So our advice is simple. Trust the professionals you choose. The right team won’t make the day feel managed, they’ll make it feel effortless, even when a lot is happening quietly in the background.

If You’re Choosing The Barns, Food Probably Matters. A Lot.
Treat food as one of the main experiences of your wedding day, not just a box to tick.
If you’re looking at The Barns at Redcoats, chances are food is already high on your list. We hear it all the time.
“What will people remember about the meal?”
“Will everyone be well fed?”
“And what about allergies?”
Food is one of the few parts of a wedding that every guest experiences, and it’s often what people talk about the next day. Charli, our Wedding & Events Manager, is hugely passionate about food, its provenance and how it makes people feel. This love and knowledge is filtered down to the team. Here, food isn’t an add-on, it’s a big part of the celebration.
Our menus are shaped by seasonality and quality, using produce from local farmers, trusted suppliers and our own growing no dig garden. We’ve hosted everything from relaxed banquets under the beams to summer BBQs on the lawn, elegant three-course wedding breakfasts and late-night feasting to keep the dancefloor full. Dietary needs are always thoughtfully catered for, so no one feels like an afterthought.
Seasonality naturally guides the style too. Lighter, vibrant menus in spring and summer, and comforting dining under the beams in autumn and winter.
So our advice is simple: choose a venue that cares about food as much as you do, and gives it the time, attention and flexibility it deserves. It makes a bigger difference to the day than most people realise.

Decide what matters to you visually, then let the space do the rest.
Styling Should Feel Like You.
This is the bit where we get really excited… because we’ve seen just how magical styling can be when it comes from the heart.
Some couples arrive with mood boards full of colour, texture, florals and lighting ideas. Others walk into the Barns, look up at the beams, and say, “We don’t want to do too much, it already feels perfect.” Both are completely valid, and both have worked beautifully here.
Over the years, we’ve lit hundreds of candles, hung disco balls over tables, carefully positioned lights so they glow just right as the sun goes down, and worked alongside some truly brilliant florists and stylists to bring big ideas to life. We’ve hidden ceremony drinks under chairs, tucked paper planes into corners ready for that first cheer, and quietly stepped back with watery eyes when the doors open and everything just lands... honestly it can be a moment!
We’ve watched the Grain Store transform with seasonal blooms, seen beams dressed in flowing drapes that stopped us in our tracks (we also get that WOW moment), and felt that collective intake of breath when couples walk in and see it all for the first time. Those moments never get old for us. It makes our job the best in the world!
What makes styling work here is that the Barns already give you a strong starting point. The history, the warmth, the countryside outside. Everything you add should build on that, not compete with it. Whether you’re going bold and colourful, soft and seasonal, or somewhere in between, the best weddings are always the ones where the space reflects the couple, not a trend.
So our top tip here is this: decide what matters to you visually, then let the space, and the team supporting you, do the rest.

Think About the Whole Day, Not Just the Ceremony.
Plan the flow of the day from hello to goodbye.
A wedding isn’t just one moment. It’s a full day of moments, and how they flow makes a huge difference to how it feels.
We always encourage our Barn couples to look beyond the ceremony and picture the full experience. How guests arrive and settle in with a drink. Where conversations start. How the energy shifts from relaxed and social into something more party-vibes as the evening unfolds.
At the Barns, this flow mainly comes naturally. Welcome drinks on the lawn, cocktails at the bar, guests drifting outside as the sun dips, dinner under the beams, then music up and the dance floor full... that's where the magic lives.
And while a day should feel easy and unforced, there’s always room for the unexpected. Perhaps a spontaneous cocktail hour, a surprise band in the Cowshed, sparklers and one last photo moment before the night is over?! Those moments often end up being the most talked about.
Our team helps gently shape the rhythm of the day so nothing feels rushed or disjointed. When it all flows, guests relax into it… and so do you.
So our top tip here is: plan your wedding as a full journey, from the first hello to the final goodbye, and don’t be afraid to add a little surprise along the way.

Build in Space to Breathe.
Give yourselves moments away from the crowd.
Weddings are joyful, emotional and, if we’re honest, at times pretty full on. There’s a lot of love in the room, a lot of people to talk to, and a lot happening all at once. That’s why we always encourage couples to build in a little breathing space for themselves.
Some of the most special moments we see are the quieter ones. Stepping outside together after the ceremony. A short walk into the countryside while guests enjoy a drink. Taking a few minutes away from the noise to just be together and let it all sink in.
The setting here makes that easy. There are open fields, countryside paths and tucked-away spots around the Barns and Farmhouse where you can pause without disappearing completely. You’re still part of the day, just with a little room to breathe.
Those moments often turn into the photos couples love most, but more importantly, they’re the moments couples remember feeling the most present. Your wedding doesn’t need to be constant noise to be memorable.
So our top tip here is: give yourselves permission to step away, even briefly. Those quiet pauses can be just as meaningful as the big celebrations.

Be mindful, but don’t overcomplicate it.
Small Choices Can Make a Big Difference.
Sustainability matters to us here at the Barns, and it’s something we’re always thinking about, tweaking and improving as we go. Not in a heavy, rule-filled way, but in a practical, thoughtful one that still leaves plenty of room for celebration.
Small choices really can make a big difference. Biodegradable confetti. Seasonal menus that work with what’s growing. Locally sourced flowers. Being mindful about what gets used once and what can be enjoyed again later in the day.
We’ve helped couples move ceremony flowers inside to dress the dance floor or create photo backdrops in the evening. We work closely with local farmers and producers to build farm-to-fork menus that feel generous and considered. Food waste and garden waste are composted onsite and fed straight back into our no-dig garden, closing the loop in a way that feels natural rather than forced.
For us, it’s about balance. Supporting couples who want to make mindful choices without losing the joy, the colour or the sense of occasion. Whether it’s food, styling or logistics, those small, thoughtful decisions quietly add meaning to the day.
So our top tip here is: do what feels right for you, and remember that sustainability doesn’t have to mean sacrifice. Often, it simply means being a little more intentional.

Entertainment Is Where Personality Really Shines.
Choose moments that surprise and delight your guests.
This is often the point in the day where weddings really come alive, and where we see couples’ personalities take centre stage.
We’ve watched owls act as ring bearers, mariachi bands appear out of nowhere mid-afternoon with tequila in tow, baby Guinness shots rolled out on trolleys, doughnuts delivered by the boot load, acoustic sets during cocktail hour, sax players jumping in alongside DJs, surprise Irish bands filling the Cowshed Bar, drag queens taking over the dance floor, and moments of fire and flair that no one saw coming… but everyone still talks about.
The thing is, we will always try our best to make every wish happen! Entertainment doesn’t have to mean a traditional band and first dance unless that’s what feels right for you. It’s about choosing moments that feel fun, unexpected and true to who you are.
Some of the most memorable weddings we’ve hosted are the ones where guests are genuinely surprised. A moment that makes people laugh, cheer or reach for their phones because they didn’t see it coming.
So our top tip here is: think about what will delight your guests, not what’s expected. Those unexpected touches often become the heart of the celebration.

Lean on the Team and Come and Meet Us.
Ask questions early and trust the people around you.
Planning a wedding can feel exciting and overwhelming all at once, especially at the beginning. That’s why having the right team around you makes such a difference.
Charli, Brim and Megan, along with the wider Barns team, are right at the heart of everything we do. They’re the ones answering your emails, walking you through the spaces, lighting candles, calming nerves and quietly cheering you on from behind the scenes. They care deeply about every couple and every celebration, and it shows in the way they work and the relationships they build along the way.
We always encourage couples to come to our Open Days, book a viewing, ask all the questions and get a real feel for the space and the people behind it. There’s no pressure here, just honest conversations, ideas shared openly and support when you need it. Whether you’re newly engaged or already knee-deep in planning, we’re always happy to help you talk things through.
You don’t need to have everything figured out yet. That’s what we’re here for… and we’d love to be part of it with you.
